This is an estimate; every cat is different. Weighing monthly is the real test: if they gain, feed a bit less; if they lose, a bit more. For an overweight cat, use the ideal weight your vet gives you. Treat cats over 7 as adults to start, and weigh kittens weekly.

These are foods sold in Taiwan, with calories published by the makers. Recipes and can sizes can differ by country, so go by the label on your bag and change the numbers if they don't match.

How it's calculated

First the base need from weight: 70 × weight in kg to the power of 0.75, roughly what a cat burns lying still all day. Then a factor: 2.5 for kittens, 1.2 for neutered adults, 1.4 for intact adults. The formula and factors come from the 2021 AAHA Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines; for adults this uses the low end of AAHA's range, since indoor cats tend to be less active.

A food's calories (per kg for dry food, per can for wet) convert the target into grams. A food left blank gets whatever calories the other food doesn't cover.

FAQ

How much should my cat eat a day?

It depends on weight. A 4 kg neutered adult needs about 240 kcal a day, roughly 60 g of a typical dry food; the exact grams depend on the food. The scale is the real check: if their weight holds steady, they're eating the right amount.

Can I use this for a prescription diet?

Yes, for the amount, but take the calorie number from your vet. Ill cats need different amounts, and some illnesses make cats eat less and lose weight. Switch to "Vet's number", enter it, pick the food, and you'll get grams or cans.

The label says something different. Which do I use?

Can I use this for a pregnant, nursing or ill cat?
