How it’s worked out
Cats age fastest in their first two years: 1 is about 15 in human years, 2 is about 24. After that, each year adds about 4. That is why multiplying by 7 is off: a 7-year-old cat is about 44 in human years.
The human-age figures come from International Cat Care, and the life stages follow the 2021 AAHA/AAFP Feline Life Stage Guidelines. Every cat ages at their own pace, so treat the number as a rough guide.
For what to watch for after 10, see senior cat care.

Frequently asked questions
How old is a 1-year-old cat in human years?
About 15. The first year is when cats grow fastest; at 6 months they're roughly 10 in human years.
At what age is a cat a senior?
From 10, under the 2021 AAHA/AAFP life stages. Senior cats should see the vet at least every 6 months.
Why not just multiply by 7?
Cats grow up much faster than people in their first two years, then slow to about 4 human years per year. A single multiplier makes kittens too young and older cats too old.
What if I don't know my cat's exact age?
Ask your vet for an estimate. Teeth, eyes and overall condition give a likely age range.
